Movie in Focus:Saturday Night fever

"Travolta's ad-libbing about his hair alone is enough to merit remembering SNF as a classic."
-- Christopher Null, FILMCRITIC.COM

Saturday Night Fever was a 1977 movie starring John Travolta as Tony Manero, a troubled Brooklyn youth whose weekend activities are dominated by visits to a New York discotheque. While in the disco Tony is the king, and the visits help him to temporarily forget the reality of his life: a dead-end job, clashes with his unsupportive and squabbling parents, racial tensions in the local community, and his associations with a dead-beat gang of friends.

The movie significantly helped to popularise disco music around the world, and made Travolta a household name. The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, featuring disco songs by the Bee Gees, was also hugely popular.

The film also showcased aspects of the music, the dancing and the subculture surrounding the disco era.

Genre: Dramas, Dance, Drama, Musical, Pop Music, Romance, Racy, Personal Triumph, Recommended, Nightlife, Theatrical Release, Essential Cinema

Donna Summers- Heaven Knows

LYRICS - HEAVEN KNOWS

Baby please,
baby please don't take your love from me
I am yours forever more,
'till eternity
silently please, listen to the words I say well
I'm not talking just for play, listen to me please

Heaven knows
it's not the way it should be
heaven knows
it's not the way it could be
don't you know
there's no need to leave

Heaven knows
I never wanna leave you
heaven knows
I only wanna please you
don't you know
love is what I need

Down inside,
don't get caught with foolish pride
put all the other things aside,
there's only you and me
believe in us,
we were always meant to be
me for you and you for me,
'till eternity

Heaven knows
it's not the way it should be
heaven knows
it's not the way it could be
don't you know
there's no need to leave

Heaven knows
I never wanna leave you
heaven knows
I only wanna please you
don't you know
love is what I need

Heaven knows
it's not the way it should be
heaven knows
it's not the way it could be
don't you know
there's no need to leave

Heaven knows
it's not the way it should be
heaven knows
it's not the way it could be
don't you know
there's no need to leave

Hot stuff - Donna Summer

LYRICS - HOT STUFF

Sittin' here, eatin' my heart out waitin'
waitin' for some lover to call
dialed about a thousand numbers lately
almost rang the phone off the wall

Lookin' for some hot stuff baby this evenin'
I need some hot stuff baby tonight
I want some hot stuff baby this evenin'
gotta have some hot stuff
gotta have some lovin' tonight
I need hot stuff
I want some hot stuff
I need hot stuff

Lookin' for a lover who needs another
don't want another night on my own
wanna share my love with a warm blooded lover
wanna bring a wild man back home

Gotta have some hot love baby this evenin'
I need some hot stuff baby tonight
I want some hot stuff baby this evenin'
gotta have some lovin'
got to have a love tonight
I need hot stuff
hot love
lookin' for hot love

Hot, hot, hot, hot stuff
hot, hot, hot
hot, hot, hot, hot stuff
hot, hot, hot

How's that hot stuff baby this evenin'
I need some hot stuff baby tonight
gimme little hot stuff baby this evenin'
hot stuff baby got to I need your love tonight
I need hot stuff
lookin' for hot stuff
gotta have some hot stuff

Sittin' here eatin' my heart out no reason
won't spend another night on my own
I dialed about hundred numbers baby
I'm bound to find somebody home

Gotta have some hot stuff baby this evenin'
I need some hot stuff baby tonight
lookin' for some hot stuff baby this evenin'
I need your love baby
don't need your love tonight

Hot stuff
baby this evening
I need hot stuff baby tonight
yes, yes, I want some hot stuff baby this evenin'
I want some hot stuff baby tonight
yes, yes, yes now hot stuff baby
I need your hot stuff baby tonight
I want some hot stuff baby this evenin'
hot stuff baby

Donna Summer - On the Radio

LYRICS - ON THE RADIO

Someone found a letter you wrote me, on the radio
And they told the world just how you felt
It must have fallen out of a hole in your old brown overcoat
They never said your name
But I knew just who they meant.

I was so surprised and shocked, and I wondered, too
If by chance you heard it for yourself
I never told a soul just how I've been feeling about you
But they said it really loud
They said it on the air
On the radio
Whoa, oh, oh
On the radio
Whoa oh oh oh
On the radio
Whoa, oh, oh
On the radio
Whoa, oh, oh

Now, now
Don't it kinda strike you sad when you hear our song
Things are not the same since we broke up last June
The only thing that I wanna hear is that you love me still
And that you think you'll be comin' home real soon
Whoa, oh, yeah, yeah
And it made me feel proud when I heard you say
You couldn't find the words to say it yourself
And now in my heart I know I can say what I really feel
'Cause they said it really loud
They said it on the air
On the radio
Whoa, oh, oh
On the radio
Whoa, oh, oh
On the radio
Whoa, oh, oh
On the radio

If you think that love isn't found on the radio

Well tune right in you made find the love you lost
'Cause now I'm sitting here with the man I sent away long ago
It sounded really loud
They said it really loud
On the radio
Whoa, oh, oh
On the radio
Whoa, oh, oh
On the radio
Whoa, oh, oh
On the radio
Whoa, oh, oh
On the radio
Whoa, oh, oh

(end)

Disco and Music,an introduction!

Nightclubs that offered recorded rock music for dancing were called discotheques. In the 1970s long rock songs, usually played at fast tempos and with skipping rhythms, became known as disco music. It was originally popular with European and African American audiences, and it was primarily intended for dancing. Disco music was featured in the movie Saturday Night Fever!
